Car Insurance UK

The reason why car insurance is so important is that by law everyone who uses a car must have some form of it. This has been the case since 1930, when the requirement to cover third parties against damage to themselves or their property was introduced. However, car insurance is not just for third parties, products also cover yourself and your car against insurable events such as accidents or thefts. After all, you have made a financial investment in your car, so you would be well advised to cover that financial investment, particularly if you used a loan to buy it.

Theoretically there are four types of car insurance cover. However, 'Act only', which is the minimum mandated by law, is extremely rare, almost to the point of extinction. It covers third party liability on public roads, and means that anything that happens on private roads is not covered. It is likely to be only taken out by those with such a bad driving record that they can't get anything else.

Third party insurance is less rare. It covers the person insured whether or not they are on public property or on private roads as well. It doesn't just cover third party claims, it also covers legal liabilities such as passenger indemnity if a passenger of yours should, for example, knock over a cyclist with a car door. This should cover some legal costs as well. The problem is with third party only insurance is that it doesn't cover any damage to your own car, and if you would want the car repaired or replaced then you would have to pay for it yourself.

This is covered by the next step up, which is third party fire and theft, the idea of which is to make sure that the insured is covered for damage to their car caused by a fire, or by an actual or attempted theft - so yes, if your car is nicked and used for a robbery and is later found burnt out this type of insurance covers you. This does not cover you should the damage occur to your car in an accident - as that is the next step up. Third party fire and theft should therefore only be used for cars that are not of such high value to their owner.

It is not possible to cover yourself against every type of risk on uk car insurance, but should you wish to cover yourself for as many as possible, then you should go for comprehensive car insurance. You get accidental damage cover, which pays for repairs should your car be in an accident. It should also cover personal accident insurance should you suffer specified injuries whilst driving.
